Kansas City Travel Guide
Nationally recognized for its exquisite fountains, great food and rich music tradition,
Kansas City, Missouri, a one-time frontier trading post and former 'cowtown', has emerged as one of the largest and most prominent cities in the Midwest.
Since cattle stockyards were such a huge part of Kansas City’s early history, its little wonder that KC has become famous for being "the place" to go for great barbecue! In fact, there are more than 100 barbecue restaurants in the KC metro area. Some of the more popular and nationally recognized include KC Masterpiece, Gates & Sons Bar-B-Q, Arthur Bryant's Barbecue and Fiorella's Jack Stack Barbecue.
Almost equally famous for its food, Kansas City has a rich tradition for being a center for musicians as well. Once featuring some of the most highly regarded jazz artists such as the George Lee Orchestra, Count Bassie and Charlie Parker it is only fitting that KC is home to one of the first museums dedicated solely to this art form, the American Jazz Museum.
Other museums and attractions worth checking out during your visit include the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library & Museum, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the Kansas City Zoo, and the impressive, recently renovated Union Station. If its thrills you’re seeking or maybe an escape from the heat be sure to visit Worlds of Fun or nearby Oceans of Fun. For a more relaxing time in Kansas City, take a stroll down at the Country Club Plaza, where you can enjoy some of the city’s best shops, hotels and restaurants.
Home to the NFL Chiefs, MLB Royals and MLS Wizards, Kansas City has plenty to offer sports fans of all ages and interests. Kansas City also hosts the Negro League Baseball Museum, which features that league’s stars before MLB was integrated. You’ll want to mark your calendars and make plans to visit the $276 million Sprint Center Arena (Opened in October 2007) that will house the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame.
No matter where your interests lie, Kansas City can guarantee to entertain!
